How the math works

Your tip is simply the difference between what you paid and what the bill was:

$65.00 - $50.00 = $15.00

To turn that into a percentage, divide the tip by the bill and multiply by 100:

($15.00 ÷ $50.00) × 100 = 30.0%

Note: This calculation assumes no tax was added on top. If your bill already includes tax, enter the post-tax total and the tool will show your effective tip percentage.

About This Calculator

What it does

Input your bill and the total you paid to calculate the exact tip percentage. Useful for verifying receipts and catching mandatory service charges. Example: a $60 bill with a $72 total means a 20% tip—but a $75 total would reveal a 25% charge worth questioning.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate tip percentage backwards?

(Total paid − Bill) ÷ Bill × 100 = tip percent. A $70 total on a $60 bill is a 16.7% tip.

How do I verify a service charge?

Compare the calculated percentage to the expected 15–20%. A much higher figure is likely a mandatory service charge, not a voluntary tip.
